CAS overturns Turkish European bans

Fenerbahce's chairman has announced that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has suspended the two-year ban from European competition imposed by UEFA for their alleged involvement in a match-fixing scandal.

Fenerbahce players and fans are united in their hope of Champions League qualification.
Fenerbahce were initially given a three-year ban from European competition.

The Istanbul club and local rivals Besiktas received bans from the Champions League and Europa League respectively after allegations emerged they have been involved in fixing domestic Super Lig matches.

Fener were given a three-year ban from Europe, although the third season was set to be deferred for a probationary period of five years. Besiktas were handed a one-year ban.

Both clubs vehemently denied the accusations and have now asked CAS to lift the bans and allow them to compete in their respective competitions until their appeal is completed.

"Fenerbahce soccer team will attend the Champions League [third qualifying round] draw on Friday and continue on its path," chairman Aziz Yildirim told the club's official television channel.

Yildirim himself received a six-year prison sentence for his part in the scandal which rocked Turkish football in 2011, but was released pending his appeal.
