Chelsea apologises for Ramires gaffe

Chelsea has offered an apology to the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) over a miscommunication which ultimately cost Ramires a place at the recent Confederations Cup.

Ramires joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2010
Ramires has not been selected to play for Brazil since the miscommunication.

Ramires missed international friendlies against Russia and Italy last season, leading CBF president Jose Maria Marin to doubt the midfielder’s commitment to the Selecao cause.

However, a Chelsea spokesman has now clarified the issue, dismissing Marin’s claims that Ramires overlooked his national team duties in order to attend a dinner party held by his wife.

"Contrary to media reports, Chelsea Football Club can confirm that Ramires was not available to play for Brazil in friendly matches against Russia and Italy in March of this year due to injury,” a statement read.

"The left abductor muscle injury was confirmed following an MRI scan and he underwent treatment at Chelsea FC's medical department from March 17 to March 28. Throughout this time information was relayed to the Brazilian national team doctor in the usual way and the treatment was agreed between the club and national team.

"However, Chelsea FC would like to apologise that it was not made clear when Ramires would be able to report back to the national squad."
