Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen has turned down an offer to join Bayer Leverkusen, according to reports in the German media.
Leverkusen, who finished third in the Bundesliga last season, had been linked with a move for 21-year-old Eriksen – but kicker reported that the Denmark international had rejected their offer.
The paper said he could have signed a contract that would have earned him more than €1.6 million a year - but his agent said money had not been a decisive factor in the decision.
"The sporting difference between Ajax and Bayer is not too big. He would not have made the next step in his career there," Martin Schoots was quoted as saying.
Eriksen has also been linked with a switch to Liverpool, and Ajax boss Frank de Boer has backed him to succeed if he moves to Anfield.
At the weekend, Eriksen told Voetbal International that he has "to go to a club that is bigger than Ajax in every way" but "no clubs like that have shown interest yet".
