Fernandez keen on PSG role

Former Paris Saint-Germain player and coach Luis Fernandez has suggested that he could replace Leonardo as the French champions' sporting director.

• Blog: All falling apart?

PSG announced last week that Leonardo had decided to leave his post when the summer transfer window closes on September 2.

Fernandez has since told RMC that he would welcome the opportunity to return to the Parc des Princes, where he played between 1978 and 1986 before coaching the club in two separate spells.

"It would please me enormously to go back there, and why not have that post? It's a post with a lot of responsibility," he said.

"That wouldn't put me off. I'm very attached to PSG, and it's a club that means a lot to me. But I'm not the only one to decide."

The Euro 1984 winner won the Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue and European Cup Winners' Cup during his first spell as PSG coach before returning to the dugout for a trophyless three-year period up to the end of the 2002-03 campaign.

While Fernandez hopes his future lies with PSG, Diego Lugano has revealed that his immediate plans are to leave the club.

The Uruguay international has played just 12 league games since his move from Fenerbahce in 2011 and did not feature at all last season, being left out of the club's Champions League squad before being loaned to Malaga in January.

The centre-back will still join Laurent Blanc's squad for pre-season training after returning from his holiday following the conclusion of the Confederations Cup.

However, he told Urugol.com that his preparations were likely to be for the benefit of a new club as he attempts to negotiate a way out of the final year of his PSG contract.

"I'm going back to PSG, but what to say? For the moment, nothing," he said. "I'm going to do my pre-season with the intention of leaving and the idea of finding a club where I'll play.

"Nothing's yet been decided, so I'm going to Paris. I'm under contract, and it's not only up to me."
