Lyon president fires warning to Gomis

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has told Bafetimbi Gomis he could regret his refusal to leave the club and revealed that Yoann Gourcuff may have a way out of the Stade de Gerland.

Lyon celebrate after Bafetimbi Gomis scored what proved to be Lyon's winner at home to Montpellier
Gomis has rejected a move to Swansea.

Aulas has repeatedly stated that Gomis, 27, would be allowed to leave the club this summer, even though the France international has a year remaining on his contract.

The forward will not be part of the OL squad that flies to the USA on Friday for next week's friendly against the New York Red Bulls, and has spent part of this week training with the club's Under-19 squad.

Gomis, who cost €15 million when he arrived from Saint-Etienne in 2009, is determined not to be forced into a move he does not want and has already rejected a transfer to Swansea City.

And although Aulas suggested a solution would be found, he told a press conference, reported on the club's official website: "There's no reason for things to get nasty. Simply, I think you have to be tenacious, explain things and have faith in those who handle the sporting side of the club.

“When a position is taken, it's not to please anyone or justify anything. There has been a decision made, and it's shared by all those at the club.

"When you have 26 years of experience of running a club, the worst thing - and that could be characterised by a lack of experience or professionalism - would be to imagine that we do things without thinking about them first.

“In general, when we do something and it's an idea everyone's in agreement with, it means we won't have any regrets. But he might have some."

In contrast to Gomis, Gourcuff, 27, remains part of coach Remi Garde's plans, even though the France international midfielder has seen Clement Grenier leapfrog him as the team's first-choice creative fulcrum.

However, as the squad's highest earner - and with OL looking to slash their wage bill to help reduce their €25 million debt – he could move on in the summer.

"There is a possible way out, but nothing's been put down in writing yet," Aulas said of the player he purchased from Bordeaux for €22 million in 2010. But he refused to reveal who might be interested in signing Gourcuff, explaining: "That has to remain confidential if we want it to come off. You'll have to take us at our word. We say what we're going to do, and we do what we say."

On Friday, L'Equipesuggested the player remained in contact with teams who had previously approached him - Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Monaco.
