Mazzarri promises committed Inter

Inter Milan coach Walter Mazzarri has said his team will do everything they can to win every time they take to the field - but he is not promising fans anything else.

The former Napoli coach joins with Inter at their lowest ebb for almost two decades, without European football next season after finishing ninth in Serie A.

Antonio Cassano has left for Parma, while only Ishak Belfodil, Marco Andreolli and Mauro Icardi have been brought in.

And Mazzarri said that meant any suggestions that the Nerazzurri could challenge for the title again in 2013-14 were premature.

"The starting grid is clearly defined," he said at a press conference. "It is made up of the investments and the wage bills of the various clubs, but I have a duty to instil into my players' minds that each game is there to be won.

"I cannot make any declarations, and we can't talk about the Scudetto right from day one - but we'll update as we go along."

Mazzarri took 31 players with him to Inter's summer training camp and said he had not ruled out that number growing, explaining: "If there's the chance to sign top players, then I'd be happy - any coach would be - but that is not my field.

"Let's not forget, though, that this team finished ninth last season and I now have to get them performing to their very best.

"I want to see an Inter side which is expressive and has a spirit and an identity, and one which never gives up. These are the characteristics which I think I can promise."

He said he had "felt a great willingness" from all the players at the training camp, adding: "They are serious professionals and they want to bounce back from last year, which forms excellent foundations to build upon.

"You need to work on motivation in football, but I get the feeling that this squad's motivation is already sky-high."
