Moratti backs Mazzarri's Inter for title

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti believes his club are already strong enough to challenge for the Scudetto this season, although a big-name signing could arrive if coach Walter Mazzarri requests one.

• Blog: New era for Inter?

The Nerazzurri have already brought in Mauro Icardi from Sampdoria and Ishak Belfodil from Parma, with Antonio Cassano heading in the opposite direction.

A 2012-13 season of struggle culminated in failure to qualify for Europe for the first time in 15 seasons, but Moratti says the purse strings are not tied too tightly and new coach Mazzarri will be given funds to spend if he sees fit.

"It depends on Mazzarri's first few days," he said. "[A top player] could arrive. We are only at the beginning and the most interesting things emerge later on."

Former Napoli coach Mazzarri began work on Monday, getting to know his new squad of players and informing Ezequiel Schelotto and Matias Silvestre that they do not figure in his plans.

Thirty-one other Nerazzurri players are under the microscope in the club's pre-season training camp in Pinzolo from Wednesday and if Mazzarri declares himself happy with the tools he has at his disposal, then Moratti is also convinced that Inter are capable of challenging once again.

"I've told the fans, if things are done seriously and done well, then they can think about the title," he added in the Gazzetta dello Sport. "Even if Juve still have that little bit extra at the moment, I'm optimistic. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see things badly. I like this squad. I like Icardi and Belfodil. We wanted a centre-forward and we've signed two."

The biggest signing of the summer is that of Mazzarri, though. Having led Napoli to second place last season, the expectations are high at a club starved of success since Jose Mourinho left after winning the treble in 2010.

"Mou is something else, but certainly Mazzarri is somebody who works a lot," said Moratti. "Mazzarri is good at getting results. I appointed Mazzarri because he transmits ambition and gets the best out of the players."
