Spurs mull Benteke bid

From relative unknown to one of Europe's most prolific forwards, it's been quite a year for Christian Benteke.

Tottenham Hotspur believe they are best placed to sign Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, and club sources have told ESPN they are considering a bid that would test Villa’s resolve.

Blog: Villa collapse, Benteke possibility

Benteke handed in a transfer request this week, and ESPN has been told the Belgium international forward would be open to a move to White Hart Lane.

Villa have put a price tag of £25 million on the player - which would mean Tottenham breaking their transfer record for the second time this summer after the arrival of Brazil international Paulinho for a reported £17 million.

Head coach Andre Villas-Boas feels it is essential that Spurs make a statement of intent up front, especially after missing out on David Villa and seeing moves for Brazil international Leandro Damiao stumble in successive windows.

Given his mix of force and finesse, Benteke is seen as a player who could immediately tie Villas-Boas’ system together. The Portuguese coach’s style of play has generally seen most success with a powerful forward, not least when Radamel Falcao was part of the attack at FC Porto in 2010-11.

At the age of 22, Benteke would represent value for money, although it remains to be seen whether Tottenham are willing to go as high as £25 million. The club are also monitoring Real Madrid B forward Jese Rodriguez, who plays between the midfield and the front-runner.

Valencia forward Roberto Soldado had been touted as an option, but it appears that deal is unlikely to come to fruition.
