Hughes: Begovic going nowhere

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes is confident that Asmir Begovic will be his first-choice goalkeeper come the start of the new season after revealing there have been no offers for the Bosnia international.

Asmir Begovic looks set to stay at Stoke.

Begovic, 26, has been linked with a host of clubs over the summer - including Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal - but now appears certain to start the new campaign at the Britannia Stadium.

That means Hughes will have to decide whether to loan out Jack Butland next term, with the England international eager for regular playing time in the build-up to the 2014 World Cup.

The Potters boss is relaxed over Begovic's future, though, telling the Stoke Sentinel: "There's nothing happening there. Asmir is No. 1 at this club at the moment and that's what most 'keepers want to be.

"From my knowledge, there have been no other clubs coming in and enquiring about him, so I'm happy and quite clear in my mind that Asmir will be the goalkeeper this year."

With Begovic as his first-choice goalkeeper, Butland is now likely to be allowed to move on loan for the season, with talks planned between Stoke and the former Birmingham City man's representatives.

Butland's agent, Gary Mellor, had revealed that there was a possibility the 20-year-old may move to Spain, however, he now feels that is unlikely.

"People have mentioned him in Spain, but that is not on our radar," Mellor said. "The only interest Jack has got at the moment is getting his head down and establishing himself at Stoke City."
