Austin move to Hull called off

Charlie Austin’s move from Burnley to Hull City has collapsed after he failed a medical, the Championship club have confirmed.

Charlie Austin scored twice for Burnley in their 3-3 draw against promotion-chasing Watford
Charlie Austin will not be moving to Hull City.

Austin, 24, arrived at the newly-promoted Premier League side on Monday to complete the switch, after the two clubs had agreed a reported £4.5 million fee.

However, the move was called off later that night following the striker’s failure to complete his medical, believed to stem from his long-term shoulder problem.

Austin has dislocated his shoulder three times in the last four years - a record that ultimately put the Tigers off completing the transfer.

Burnley released a statement on their official website on Tuesday confirming the news.

The statement read: “Burnley striker Charlie Austin will not be joining Hull City after unforeseen complications halted a proposed move to the KC Stadium. Austin, 24, remains a Burnley player and the club will make no further comment at his time.”

Hull manager Steve Bruce revealed that the move had broken down due to Austin having failed his medical.

Bruce told talkSPORT: “There has been a bit of a problem with his medical, which is the worst scenario for everybody concerned, and more so the boy. It's an awful, awful, awful situation to find ourselves in, but unfortunately the medical is not great, so it looks as if it is a non-starter at the moment.

“I think he is surprised because he has not really missed any games over the last couple of years. It is a blow for him and it's a blow for us, but there you go. These medicals are so stringent, things have progressed with scans and all the rest of it and obviously he has got a problem.''

And Bruce admits he will have to start from scratch as he looks to bolster his frontline for next season.

“We are obviously looking because we are all disappointed at what happened yesterday with Charlie," he said. "We will go back to the drawing board again and see, and I would expect us to still bring in two or three at least to try to give us a hand.

“We have brought in three at the moment - I would expect us to bring in another three at least to help us over the next 10 months. But as I said, we are going to go back to the drawing board now because there has been a lot of work on Charlie and I think he would have been great for us, but unfortunately, it doesn't look as if it's going to be.''

Meanwhile, Tigers defender Paul McShane has signed a new two-year contract with the club.

“I'm delighted to sign a new deal,'' McShane told the club’s official website. “Last season was such a great season and then I got offered the new contract. I couldn't wait to come in and get it signed and now I can just get on with looking forward to the new season.”

McShane has made 98 appearances for Hull since initially arriving at the KC Stadium on loan in 2008.
