Anelka planning to end career at Albion

Nicolas Anelka says that he hopes West Bromwich Albion will be the last club of his career after becoming one of the Baggie's biggest signings in their history.

• Blog: Peace policy sound

In a long interview posted on the club's official website on Friday, Anelka, 34, who spent the latter part of last season at Juventus, stated his desire to help Albion seal a place in Europe during his time in the West Midlands.

The striker became the first signing of the summer to arrive at The Hawthorns on Thursday, penning a one-year contract, with a further year's option a possibility at the club's discretion.

"I think I will finish in England, I'm happy here," he said. "I also hope that it will be with this club. I think this is the right club for me. I hope everything will be perfect. I hope we will be successful and reach Europe. We will try to do better than last season.

"That's why I'm here. When I spoke with the head coach [Steve Clarke], he said he wants to do better than last year. We will try our best to do that."

Paris-born Anelka, who won 69 caps for France, has a tall order in lifting the club's fortunes even higher, after they finished eighth last season - their best ever Premier League placing.

However, the former Chelsea man has had a head start having worked for nine months with Steve Clarke at Stamford Bridge - a period he remembers fondly.

"I know the head coach, which was very important for me," he said. "He knows how to use me on the pitch, which is important later on in your career. I know he likes to play football and that's why I signed here. I also have friends in the changing room. I have a lot of good memories of playing against West Brom and now I have to do my best to score for them.

"When I was playing for Chelsea, it was always tough to beat Albion. The team plays good football and I know I will be able to play my game here. I don't know which position I will play but as long as I'm playing and enjoying my football, I'm happy.

"I know this is a big club and a family club. The Hawthorns has a good atmosphere, like many of the Premier League stadiums. The facilities at the training ground are also amazing. I'm sure I will enjoy my training and hopefully that will extend to the stadium."
