Former AC Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini has joined Serie A rivals Fiorentina on a one-year contract.
The 36-year-old Ambrosini’s Milan contract expired at the end of last month with club president Adriano Galliani confirming a new deal would not be forthcoming.
The news was met with speculation that Ambrosini could finally leave Italy after 19 years of senior football, with Premier League club West Ham United a likely destination.
But Fiorentina moved quickly to snare Ambrosini, hoping his wealth of experience would help the club move to the top of the Serie A.
“ACF Fiorentina has completed the signing of midfielder Massimo Ambrosini on a permanent contract, the former Italy midfielder putting pen to paper on a one-year deal until 30 June 2014,” read a statement on the club’s website - en.violachannel.tv.
“Ambrosini has acquired a wealth of experience during a distinguished career, winning one Club World Cup, two Champions League trophies, two European Super Cups, four Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups.”
