Cavani warned against PSG move

Former Juventus and Sampdoria coach Ciro Ferrara has said Edinson Cavani would be making a big mistake if he joined Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Edinson Cavani: On Chelsea's radar
Cavani is increasingly being linked with the Ligue 1 champions

The Ligue 1 champions appear to be the only club willing to meet Napoli’s €63 million asking price for the Uruguay international striker and the clubs are reportedly in talks - but Ferrara has questioned whether a transfer to Paris would be the right career move.

“What would I say to Edinson to make him stay at Napoli? I’d go in with a sliding tackle right at his ankles, just like the old times,” Ferrara told Corriere dello Sport.

“I’m joking, of course, but his situation is complicated. On the one hand, there is the president rightly asking to receive the full amount of his release clause, and on the other hand there is an ambitious lad who has been contacted by clubs who can offer him a prestigious stage to play on.”

Should Cavani leave Serie A this summer, Ferrara has urged him to be careful about the destination he picks - if he is given a choice.

Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City are also reported to be keen on securing his services, but only PSG have come close to the price demanded by Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis.

“With all the respect for my friend [Laurent] Blanc [the new PSG coach], PSG don’t have the same attraction as Real Madrid and Chelsea,” Ferrara added. “If I were to choose, I would certainly not go to Paris.”

Blanc recently voiced his admiration for Cavani, and said he would be delighted if he were added to the Parc des Princes squad.

Ferrara said he believed the 26-year-old, Italian football’s leading goalscorer last season, should be sold, adding: “I would sell him even for €56 or €57 million. I don’t think it’s worth keeping a player against his wishes.”

Cavani scored 29 times in Serie A last season, six more than his closest challenger, Antonio di Natale of Udinese. Those goals took his tally in three years at Napoli to 78 in 104 appearances.
