Perch joins Wigan

Wigan have completed the signing of James Perch from Newcastle United.

James Perch is the latest new face to arrive at Wigan this summer

The 27-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal at the DW Stadium and becomes new manager Owen Coyle’s fourth recruit for Athletic. He is thought to have cost the FA Cup winners around £750,000.

It brings to an end the versatile Perch’s three-year stay at Newcastle where, after being booked on each of his first five appearances, he went on to prove a valuable member of the squad as United finished fifth in the Premier League in 2011-12.

Perch, who can play in the centre of midfield or anywhere in defence, scored one goal in 80 games for Newcastle and became a crowd favourite.

He said: "I think Wigan Athletic is a great club and after speaking with the manager, his ambition and determination to take the club back to the Premier League where it belongs is something I wanted to be a part of.

"It feels great to be here with a new challenge ahead of me, and I’m very excited at getting that started.

"The prospect of helping to get the team promoted was really appealing and I can’t wait to meet the rest of the boys and get started."

Coyle had already brought in Burnley midfielder Chris McCann, Blackpool left-back Stephen Crainey and Norwegian defender Thomas Rogne.

However, Wigan are set to lose top scorer Arouna Kone, who is likely to join Everton for £5 million.
