Neville: England youth 'disappointing'

Gary Neville has some reservations about the state of the England youth teams following the failures this year from the under-21, under-20 and under 19 squads.

England coach Gary Neville has admitted his disappointment in the country's youth teams after poor showings at Under-21 and Under-20 level over the last month.

Neville, who works under Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson, reflected on England's group stage exits from the European Under-21 Championship and Under-20 World Cup, acknowledging both teams underperformed.

Stuart Pearce was fired after the Young Lions failed to register a single point at the Euros, while Peter Taylor's Under-20 side finished bottom of their group at the World Cup.

But Neville is confident England's youngsters have the potential to succeed in the future and believes it is only a matter of time for the talent to seep through to the senior team.

"They haven't done well as they would have wanted," Neville said. "And it's disappointing... tournament football is one of the most difficult things you'll do.

"It's quite clear there's a group of players coming to the end of their international careers... but there are young players, good technical players, hopefully they can grow in these next few years and we can win something with them."
