Buffon tipped to go on until 2018 WC

Gianluigi Buffon has been tipped by his agent to remain as Italy's No. 1 goalkeeper until the 2018 World Cup.

The Juventus man was the Azzurri's hero as they clinched third place at the Confederations Cup with victory over Uruguay on Sunday.

During the tournament, however, the 35-year-old received his fair share of criticism as his side leaked ten goals, while he failed to save a single spot kick in the semi-final defeat to Spain.

Buffon is now just three appearances short of Fabio Cannavaro's record number of 136 appearances for Italy, and his representative, Silvano Martina, not only expects him to become the most capped Italian of all time, but to raise the bar significantly.

"Buffon is going to play at Euro 2016 after the 2014 World Cup," he told Gazzetta dello Sport. "He is an absolute champion and is still the best goalkeeper around. The condition he is in, he could make it to 40 and play at the World Cup in 2018. The contract he has just signed with Juve is not going to be the last big contract of his career."

Buffon signed a new deal with the Old Lady in January, tying him down to 2015 at the club he joined in 2001.

He has made over 400 appearances for the Bianconeri, winning four Serie A titles and a Serie B crown in 2007. He previously lifted the UEFA Cup for Parma, as well as the World Cup in 2006, where he conceded just two goals in the entire tournament.
