Carlos Bocanegra joins Chivas USA

Chivas USA signed former U.S. national team captain Carlos Bocanegra on Monday after acquiring the first allocation spot from Toronto FC in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft and an international roster spot through 2014.

Bocanegra, 34, left Rangers last week, with the Scottish fourth-tier club saying his contract was mutually terminated. He spent the past season on loan to Racing Santander in Spain's second division after Rangers were demoted to the fourth tier of Scottish soccer because of financial problems.

Bocanegra said in a statement announcing his signing that he's "excited" to join Chivas USA, which has made him "feel very welcomed."

"It feels really good to be coming back home. I've been following MLS a lot more closely this year, and I got my start here in the league, so I’m excited to seeing personally how much the league has grown," the defender said.

Bocanegra played for the Chicago Fire from 2000-04, then went on to Fulham (2004-08), Rennes (2008-10), Saint-Etienne (2010-11) and Rangers (2011-12).

Bocanegra has made 110 appearances for the U.S. and was the American captain at the 2010 World Cup. He has not played for the national team since November.

Bocanegra will be eligible to play for Chivas USA on July 9, which is when the summer transfer window opens, pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. The first game Bocanegra likely will be able to play is July 12 against the Philadelphia Union.

"This is great news for Chivas USA, as Carlos Bocanegra is a very experienced player with great image and with a strong desire to be in California after his time in European soccer," Chivas USA Sporting president Dennis te Kloese said in the statement. "I think his experience is going to be very valuable for us, as he knows MLS well from when he played for Chicago Fire, and has a long track record with the U.S. men's national team.

"His arrival also reaffirms and strengthens the identity we are seeking in Chivas USA; a team with outstanding elements who give a little extra to Chivas USA. The great combination of his experience and being from Los Angeles will contribute a lot to Chivas USA," concluded te Kloese.

Chivas USA is currently last in the Western Conference standings with 12 points on three wins, three draws and 10 losses.
