Neymar to have tonsils removed

Brazil striker Neymar, who won the Golden Ball for being named the best player at the Confederations Cup, will have minor throat surgery to have his tonsils removed before he joins up with new club Barcelona.

Neymar, 21, completed a €57 million move to the Spanish champions before the Confederations Cup, which the Selecao won on Sunday with an emphatic 3-0 triumph over Spain.

Neymar scored in the match, played at the Maracana, and afterwards received his accolade as the competition's best player ahead of future team-mate Andres Iniesta, with fellow Brazilian and Tottenham Hotspur target Paulinho third in the running.

The former Santos forward, who is due to move permanently to Spain next week, will have an operation in Brazil on Friday.

"It's a problem that I have, my throat always bothers me, so we're going to operate to resolve it once and for all," he told reporters, adding that it was not a serious issue.

Barcelona defender Jordi Alba will also have his tonsils removed in Barcelona, the club reported.

The club says "recovery time in both cases is about 10 days."

Alba is due to arrive at Madrid airport with the rest of Spain's squad later Monday.

Neymar scored four goals in the Confederations Cup, but was beaten to the Golden Boot by Spain striker Fernando Torres, who scored five and claimed an assist.

Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar won the Golden Gloves award as the tournament's best goalkeeper, while Spain picked up the FIFA Fair Play Trophy.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
