England crash out of U20 World Cup

England made another miserable tournament exit as Peter Taylor's side crashed out of the Under-20 World Cup in Turkey.

Needing a victory to advance from the group stage after starting their campaign with successive draws, England failed to make their dominance count and were doomed once Trezeguet curled Egypt in front 11 minutes from time.

Hassan Ahmed's stoppage-time effort piled further humiliation onto an England outfit that slumped to the bottom of Group E as Iraq and Chile advanced.

England have now gone 16 matches without a win at this level and a summer that promised so much will instead trigger further dissection of the nation's future.

In Group E's other game, Iraq secured top spot with a 2-1 win over Chile, who clinched second place regardless of the defeat.

Mahdi Kamil and Saif Salman were on target for Iraq, while Chile's consolation came via Felipe Mora.

In Group F, Uruguay defeated Uzbekistan 4-0 to secure a place in the knockout stage.

Gino Acevedo scored in the 38th minute, and Nicolas Lopez, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Ruben Bentancourt added to the total in the second half.

Uruguay finished Group F second to Croatia. Uzbekistan also advanced as one of the best third-placed teams.

Croatia, already qualified, beat New Zealand 2-1 with goals from Stipe Perica and Ante Rebic. Louis Fenton scored New Zealand's only goal in the tournament from the penalty spot in the 84th.

Information from the Press Association and Associated Press was used in this report.
