Young Socceroos rue missed chances

Australia have been left to lament a shock loss to minnows El Salvador after they were knocked out of the Under-20 World Cup due to a 2-1 loss in Turkey in their final Group C match on Friday.

The Young Socceroos were impressive in a first up 1-1 draw with group winners Colombia, who accounted for El Salvador 3-0 on Friday, but lost 2-1 to the Central Americans before falling to hosts Turkey after leading in three games.

After a slow first half, the game against hosts Turkey exploded into life after the break when Jamie McLaren opened the scoring in his first tournament start.

But Turkey hit back only two minutes later through Hakan Calhanoglu before Okay Yokuslu sealed Australia's fate with a sublime chip only minutes from time.

"We gave it everything we had and it took two of the best goals you're likely to see in this tournament to knock us out," acting captain Jackson Irvine said after the loss to Turkey at Trabzon's Huseyin Avni Aker Stadium.

"That's part of the game, and I'm proud of every one of the players. It's been a great experience, but obviously it really hurts to be leaving this early, considering how we've played."

Despite coach Paul Okon's lament over his side's loss to El Salvador, the country's first win at a FIFA tournament outside of beach soccer, he was nevertheless positive with what they put on the park.

"You can't really sum it up. They're all disappointed and nothing you say is going to console them," he said.

"We really needed to be on four points heading into this match, but they can be proud of what they gave to their nation."

In other results Greece and Paraguay drew 1-1 in their final Group D match, with both teams advancing to the knockout rounds.

In the other Group D match Mexico belted Mali 4-1 and their hopes of advancing rest on the performances of the other third-placed teams.
