France, Portugal qualify for last-16

France has qualified for the last-16 of the Under-20 World Cup despite falling to a 2-1 defeat to Group A winners Spain.

France went into the match knowing anything less than victory could dump them out of the competition, and French fears were heightened as goals to Paco Alcacer and Jese gave the Spanish the victory.

But those fears would never be realised as Ghana dumped the United Sates out of the competition with a 4-1 victory.

Frank Acheampong, Ebenezer Assifuah (2) and Kennedy Ashia goals gave the Ghanaians a chance of reaching the knock-out stages, claiming third in the group.

Meanwhile, Portugal and Nigeria automatically moved through to the last-16 after defeating Cuba and the Republic of Korea respectively in Group B.

Portugal cruised to a 5-0 victory over the already eliminated Cuba, while an early Olarenwaju Kayode was enough for Nigeria to claim victory over the Asian nation.

Korea remains in the hunt for a spot in the next round, finishing third in the group.
