Villa understands bit-part Spain role

David Villa insists he is content with his diminished role in the Spain squad, after injury and a dip in form has seen him lose his place as an automatic pick in Vincente Del Bosque's line-up.

• Bennett: Prandelli eyes revenge • Alvarez: Spain's off-field issues
• Cox: Casillas v Buffon

Villa struggled to hold down a place in the Barcelona staring XI last season and he has been out-shone by Chelsea marksman Fernando Torres in this summer's Confederations Cup, yet Spain's all-time record goal scorer seems satisfied with his position in Del Bosque's ranks.

"I have never felt untouchable in the national team," Villa told Marca. "I'm just an ordinary member of a squad that is striving to keep winning.

"I'm here to help the team, as always. This hasn't been my best year. It's not that I've come into the tournament at a disadvantage compared to my team-mates, but it was a slightly unusual situation for me at Barcelona this season."

Villa also played down media reports that his relationship with Spain striking partner Torres is strained, as the duo battle it out to finish as the Confederations Cup's leading scorer.

Torres and Villa have propelled Spain's challenge in Brazil over the last couple of weeks, with the later moving to insist the duo are close allies rather than rivals for a place in Vincente Del Bosque's starting line-up, as he described his relationship with the Chelsea striker as 'fantastic.'

"We've been playing together for a long time and have helped one another improve," Villa said. "We know that Spain winning trophies is all that matters. Individual awards are a secondary issue.

"Of course goals are always on strikers minds, because they are our bread and butter, but you end up thinking more about the chances you miss than the ones you put away."

Villa has been strongly linked with a move to the English Premier League this summer, with north London clubs Arsenal and Tottenham believed to be among those courting his services.
