The Netherlands international is preparing to travel to England with his representatives after being given permission by PSV Eindhoven to open personal discussions with the Premier League club.

Stoke chairman Peter Coates confirmed earlier this week that Pieters was one of the players new manager Mark Hughes was interested in bringing to the club during the summer transfer window.

According to sources close to the player and to the Eredivisie club, PSV have now agreed a fee with Stoke regarding the sale of the 24-year-old Dutch international, who has also been interesting Newcastle United.

The 24-year-old has been a long-term target for Stoke after new technical director Mark Cartwright identified the player as a potential signing last year.

Stoke have spent the last two summers searching for a specialist left-back and have also been linked with Blackburn Rovers’ Martin Olsson, but have been put off by the Championship club’s £7 million valuation of the Sweden international.

Negotiations over Pieters have intensified in the last couple of days and PSV have reluctantly accepted they will have to sell the left-back, who is about to enter the final year of his existing contract.

PSV have been unsuccessful in their attempts to persuade him to sign a new deal and under new regulations any player in the final year of their contract, unwilling to commit long-term to the club are relegated from the club’s first team squad and made to train and play with the reserves.

Pieters could not let that situation develop as he looks to secure his place in the Dutch squad for next summer’s World Cup finals in Rio and Stoke are hoping to provide him with the perfect solution and make him Hughes’ first signing.
