Kenwright backs transfer plan

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright allayed fears concerning the club's lack of activity in the transfer market believing manager Roberto Martinez would only have to bring in "two or three players" to strengthen the squad.

• Baines excited by Martinez
• Nangis on Everton links
• Blog: EGM an overdue step

The Toffees finished just outside the race for Europe last season, ending the Premier League campaign in sixth position, again finishing higher than their illustrious cross-town rivals Liverpool.

But unlike the Reds, who have already signed Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Simon Mignolet, Everton have been conspicuous by their lack of transfer activity, and with current stars, such as Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines, coveted by a number of clubs, there are concerns the club could start the new season on the back foot.

But Kenwright is confident the club will be stronger, not weaker, when Everton travel to Norwich for the season's opening game, believing Martinez will combine shrewdness in the market with the club's emerging brigade.

"There is no concern at all, not in the slightest," Kenwright at the club's first Annual General Meeting in five years.

"(Martinez) has been away and you will always find July 1 onwards - when the current contracts end - is when it will start.

"Liverpool have had a sale (Andy Carroll to West Ham) in the transfer market, have got some money in and are spending some money.

"We have two enquiries going on for two players and if he (Martinez) has any concern I haven't felt once ounce of it.

"He is back at the weekend raring to go.

"He hasn't met the squad yet. It is difficult for me talking for Roberto but he thinks the squad is fantastic.

"He wants to hold on to it but he also wants to bring in two or three players in the positions where we need them.

"The first step is to get the players back and get to know them and bring in two or three.

"His absolute passion is youth and he wants to get those players who are there or thereabouts in the under-21s moving forward to play for the first team."
