D.C. United makes U.S. Open Cup semis

BOYDS, Md. -- Dwayne De Rosario's tie-breaking second-half goal helped D.C. United to a 3-1 victory over the New England Revolution in Wednesday's U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal.

Chris Pontius scored before halftime for United, which will make its ninth semifinals appearance during the club's 18-year history. D.C. won the competition in 1996 and 2008.

Lionard Pajoy added a late penalty kick goal for D.C., which will travel to Chicago to face the Fire on Aug. 7. Chicago beat Orlando City 5-1.

Juan Toja scored for New England, which was seeking its first semifinals appearance in the competition since losing to D.C. in 2008.

Toja's curling free kick goal came eight minutes into the second half, and negated Pontius' 44th-minute strike.

But in the 69th minute, De Rosario reached Pontius' corner kick and looped a header over goalkeeper Matt Reis and off the underside of the crossbar.

United improved to 2-1 in U.S. Open Cup competition against the Revolution, not including a 3-2 defeat to New England in a 2011 MLS play-in round match.
