Tabarez rues Forlan miss

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez believes Diego Forlan's early penalty miss gave Brazil the impetus to grab a 2-1 win in their Confederations Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Forlan failed to convert from the spot in the 14th minute after David Luiz pulled down Diego Lugano, with Brazilian striker Fred capitalising on the error to send the hosts into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Although Edinson Cavani equalised early in the second-half, Paulinho's late header was enough to send Brazil through to the final and Tabarez conceded Forlan's miss made the difference.

"I don't like to talk about ifs and buts, but what I can say is that when we missed that penalty we gave Brazil the shot in the arm they'd been lacking up to that point," Tabarez told Fifa.com. "You just have to accept results, though, and we accept this defeat.

"That said, we could have taken the game into extra time and we even had chances to win it. I'm going away a proud man, though, because I know that if we can play like that, we can give anyone a game."
