Garcia replaces Poyet at Brighton

Brighton have named former Barcelona midfielder Oscar Garcia as the replacement for sacked head coach Gus Poyet.

The 40-year-Old Garcia joins the Seagulls from Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv, and moves into a position recently clouded in controversy.

Former Chelsea midfielder Poyet led the Championship club to fourth place last season before being knocked out of the play-off finals by Crystal Palace.

But following that defeat, Poyet, along with assistant Mauricio Taricco and coach Charlie Oatway, were suspended pending an internal inquiry into alleged breaches of contract.

And following a disciplinary hearing, the former Uruguay was dismissed while he was working as a pundit for the BBC. Taricco had his ban lifted but left the club by mutual consent, while Oatway is still suspended.

Garcia, who played for six years at the Nou Camp, said he was thrilled to be joining "one of the most exciting and progressive clubs" in England.

He told Brighton's official website: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to work in English football for the first time. Brighton and Hove Albion is one of the most exciting and progressive clubs in the country."

Meanwhile, Maccabi have announced that assistant boss Ruben Martinez and fitness coach Juan Torrijo Navaro have left to "continue their partnership with Oscar Garcia".
