Man Utd confirm Meulensteen exit

Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen has left the club, becoming the third member of Sir Alex Ferguson's backroom staff to exit since the Scot's retirement.

• Delaney: Moyes must attack
• Ronaldo 'to hold United talks'

Meulensteen joins Mike Phelan and Eric Steele in heading out of the Old Trafford exit as David Moyes ushers in a new era at the Premier League champions.

Aside from a short, unsuccessful stint as Brondby boss, the Dutchman had been at United since 2001 - taking up positions as youth and reserve team manager and later first-team coach during that time.

Meulensteen had been linked with the managerial vacancy at Wigan Athletic before Owen Coyle was appointed earlier this month and has been tipped by the Dutch media to take a coaching role under Guus Hiddink at Anzhi Makhachkala.

"I would like to thank Sir Alex Ferguson, the owners, all colleagues, players and fans who made my time at Manchester United very special and one I will never forget,'' Meulensteen said as his departure was confirmed. "I wish everyone at this great football club all the best.''

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward added: "I'd like to thank Rene for his contribution to the club, particularly since he returned to Old Trafford in 2007.

"He has been first-team coach for five years and in that time he has given great assistance to Alex and Mike Phelan in keeping the team at the top of the game, not only in this country but in Europe as well. On behalf of everyone at United, I wish him well for the future.''
