Mignolet exit boosts Westwood

Sunderland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has admitted he must begin to play first team games if his career at the club is to continue.

The 28-year-old joined the Black Cats on a free transfer from Coventry City in 2011, but has found first team opportunities limited due to the impressive form of Simon Mignolet, who completed a summer move to Liverpool this week.

Having seen his lack of game time cost him his starting place for the Republic of Ireland to Millwall's David Forde, Westwood was once again forced to admit that his future at Sunderland hinges on his first team opportunities.

"I love it at Sunderland, but if I'm not going to play... It's a tough decision, but I need to play football, I think that's evident in itself," he told Sky Sports News. "A lot of stuff can happen over the off-season. Basically, I just want to play football. I'm looking forward to the future, if I'm honest. It's been a frustrating 12 months or so, so I'm looking to come out of the dark times and into some good ones."

With Paolo Di Canio keen for the former Carlisle United goalkeeper to remain at the club, it is understood the Black Cats are intending to source a young understudy to Westwood, with PSV Eindhoven's Jeroen Zoet considered their primary target.
