Hyypia bemused by player departures

Bayer Leverkusen manager Sami Hyypia has expressed his concern about the club's transfer activities, claiming the Bundesliga side is being harmed by the recent number of player exits.

With the players who undertook international duties recently still on holiday, Hyypia had to start training with only 8 players on Monday.

The Leverkusen boss is facing his first season with exclusive responsibility after his companion Sascha Lewandowski stepped down from his Bundesliga coaching job to return to the club's youth academy.

And Hyypia is far from impressed with the shape of his squad at the moment.

"It is not ideal to lose so many players," he told Rheinische Post.

In total, 9 players have left Leverkusen. With the departures of Chelsea bound Andre Schurrle and right winger Daniel Carvajal, who was bought back by Real Madrid, two of the cornerstones of the team were lost.

Leverkusen have signed South Korea international Son Heung-Min from HSV to replace Schurrle and Giulio Donati from Inter Milan as replacement for Carvajal.

But Hyypia believes that the new signings are not enough to bolster his squad.

"We still need some players," he added. "I hope to have more depth and quality in my squad in a few weeks time."

The defence is the area in most need of strengthening, according to Hyypia. Leverkusen skipper Simon Rolfes is confident that the club will continue to work on Hyypia's wish-list.

"I am sure we there will be some more players coming in," Rolfes said.

Hyypia refuses to specify the aim for the upcoming season until his squad is completed.

"We need to have all the players, before we can talk about that," he said.

He made it clear, though, that he won't change his preferred 4-3-2-1 line-up: "I love this system and I hope we will get players suitable for it."

It seems as if Bayer sporting director Rudi Voller is up for some busy weeks until the start of Bundesliga in August.
