Sunderland end Paulinho interest

Sunderland have ended their interest in Livorno striker Paulinho, a source close to the club has told ESPN.

Paulinho is expected to move abroad in the summer
Sunderland are said to have ended their interest in Paulinho.

The Brazilian forward helped the Italian club secure promotion to Serie A this season, scoring over twenty goals, and was heavily linked with a move to Sampdoria.

- Mignolet exit poses questions

However, after club president Aldo Spinelli stated it would take a bid of between €10-12million to secure the 27-year-old’s services, Sunderland’s interest has softened, as they begin to look at other striking targets including Manchester City’s John Guidetti.

Swedish international Guidetti is currently on the fringes of the City’s first team squad, but Sunderland are keen to learn the extent of a freak injury he suffered last year that saw him lose feeling in his right leg before moving forward.

Meanwhile the Black Cats have learned they face competition from Spanish side Villarreal for the signature of Argentine defender Lucas Orban according to the Sunderland Echo.

Recently promoted back to the top division in Spain after a year in Liga Adelante, Villarreal are keen to begin their rebuilding job with Oban at the heart of their defence.

However, the defender has previously put off making a decision over his future until the completion of his current league campaign with Tigre.

But with the Argentine season drawing to a close last Saturday, Orban can now hold discussions with his family over where his future lies.

The Echo claims the Black Cats remain confident of landing the 24-year-old, but stress they will need to agree a deal with both Tigre and River Plate who own 50% of the player’s registration.

Speaking earlier this month, his agent Filippo Colasanto told the Sunderland Echo: "There are three or four other clubs interested in him. He has had some offers from Brazil, two or three from Spain and one from France.”

"But of course, he would be interested in going to the Premier League. Every player that has that opportunity is. And another factor is it would be the season before the World Cup.

“It could be an opportunity for him to go and play in a big league, and the Premier League is the best in the world. Lucas Orban is a very good player for the type who are successful in England too. He has a good heart, is tall and powerful and is very good at heading.”
