Tueart: Give British players a chance

Former Sunderland star Dennis Tueart has voiced concern at the increasing number of overseas players in the British game.

The ex-England international has seen Sunderland undergo a makeover with a host of new signings from mainland Europe as well as the removal of Bryan 'Pop' Robson as chief scout in favour of Italian Valentino Angeloni.

And he told the Sunderland Echo: "Just last week, I read that York City had signed a player from Estonia. It amazes me that they can't develop their own.

"Young English players need to be given a chance. Johan Cruyff said every successful side needed six or seven players brought up with the traditions of that club.

"He had that in the Ajax team he played in and then the Barcelona team he managed. It was the same thing for me in my club career. The 1973 cup-winning team at Sunderland had six lads who had come through from youth level."

Meanwhile Craig Liddle, who recently left his position as Sunderland Under-18s coach, voiced a similar concern about home-grown coaches.

Liddle, who joined Sunderland in 2012 as Professional Development Lead Coach, saw his time with the club come to an end as Paolo Di Canio looked to install his own coaching staff, comprising mainly of his fellow countrymen.

"It's a worry for English coaches involved in the game because the EPPP [Elite Player Performance Plan] has come into play in the last couple of months," he told Sky Tyne and Wear.

"It's not going to be an immediate impact, it is going to take time, and I think it's important that the English coaches are given the opportunity to try and deliver."
