Guardiola to give youth a chance

A representative of Pep Guardiola supplied him with information about Bayern Munich's youth academy, the Spaniard revealed during his first press conference as coach of the European champions on Monday.

Having originally been announced as Bayern's next boss back in January, the former Barcelona coach was finally unveiled in his new role to the media.

And Guardiola explained that while he was hidden away in New York during his sabbatical, an associate was busy scouting the Bavarian side's young talent.

"I have heard many good things about the academy. We want to integrate several youngsters into first-team training," he said.

Guardiola, however, shied away from putting extra pressure on the club's youth academy - that has spawned such talent as Holger Badstuber, Thomas Muller and David Alaba in recent years - instead insisting that he will give all the younger players a chance before making a decision.

"I have to get to know the youth players first and then talk to Matthias [Sammer, the club's sporting director] and Kalle [Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the Bayern CEO]," he said. "I am convinced Bayern has many good youngsters. But I have been in New York for a year, I don't have a whole lot of information about those players. I need to see them. Then we will talk and take a decision."

Guardiola likened the youth set-up at his new club to that of Barcelona's, adding that the youngsters' development will not be jeopardised by the arrival of new signings.

"If a team has won that much, you don't need to change everything," he said. "The team is very good. Barcelona and Bayern play on a very high level and that also applies to the youth department. We will have a team that will hopefully be very successful."

The new Bayern boss surprised many during the press conference, having worked hard to learn German during his time in New York.

Guardiola answered all the questions, apart from those asked by Spanish or Italian journalists, in German, confirming that he had been helped by a language teacher, albeit one who follows Bayern's rivals.

"My German teacher is a BVB [Borussia Dortmund] fan," he said.

The Spaniard also revealed, in German, what has driven him throughout his career and still continues to do so.

"I love football. I loved football as a player and I love football as a coach," he said. "Football is my drink."
