Brooks signs new Hertha deal

Hertha Berlin defender John Anthony Brooks has put pen to paper and signed a new deal at the club, tying him down until 2017.

Brooks enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season in Berlin last term as the club gained promotion to the Bundesliga.

The 20-year-old made a total of 29 appearances for Hertha and was a key member of Bundesliga II's best defence.

"Jay has had an outstanding season," Hertha general manager Michael Preetz told kicker. "The Bundesliga will be a totally new challenge for him. He can now fully concentrate on that."

Hertha coach Jos Luhukay was also happy to have tied down the defender, whose old deal was set to expire in 2015, to the club for two more years.

Luhukay, who has won promotion with Borussia Monchengladbach, FC Augsburg and now Hertha, said: "The club wants more continuity and acts accordingly."

Brooks, meanwhile, is still undecided as to which nation he will represent in the future.

Eligible to play for both United States and Germany, he has recently opted against featuring in United States' Under-20s' World Cup campaign.

"I will not play the World Cup," he told Berliner Kurier. "I want to fully focus on Hertha first. I need to make the next step to further myself. That's why I need to take part in the full summer preparation."

Brooks was also touted as an option for Germany's Under-21 squad for the European Championship in Israel, but failed to make the cut.
