Poyet sacked as Brighton manager

Former Brighton manager Mark McGhee could return to the Championship club on a temporary basis following the sacking of Gus Poyet.

Brighton released a statement to confirm Poyet's departure on Sunday night, a day before the players are due to report back for the first day of pre-season, with the decision made by the club's internal disciplinary panel.

The Uruguayan has said he will appeal against the decision.

"Gus Poyet has been informed today by Brighton & Hove Albion football club's internal disciplinary panel that his employment has been terminated with immediate effect," the club statement said. "This followed his suspension, an investigation, and a subsequent formal disciplinary process."

Poyet said he had received no communication from the club and that he had only become aware of the decision after BBC staff handed him a copy of the Brighton statement while he was on set during the Confederations Cup match between Spain and Nigeria.

"I think the BBC have a great story forever, because a manager getting information that he is being released from his employment by the BBC is quite surprising," he added.

"I have had no communication, no texts, no e-mail. I didn't receive anything on my phone, so it is all up to you and the timing.

"The only thing I'm concentrating on is the appeal. I will appeal because it's the right thing to do."

Poyet led Brighton to the play-offs last season but his tenure at the Amex Stadium had become uncertain after it was revealed that he, assistant manager Mauricio Taricco and coach Charlie Oatway had been told to stay away from the club.

Brighton have remained tight-lipped over the reasons for Poyet's sacking, but Sunday's decision came after he had failed to attend a disciplinary hearing last week.

The Brighton Argus reported that McGhee, who managed the Seagulls between 2003 and 2006 and lives in the area, could step in on a temporary basis.

The Scotland assistant manager was quoted as saying: "Of course I would. I still have contact with people at the club.

"I am here and available and, if they wanted me for a couple of weeks without prejudice, then absolutely I would be willing to help them."

Information from Press Association was used in this report.
