Moberg-Karlsson raring to go

New Sunderland signing David Moberg-Karlsson says that the opportunity to join the club was one he could not turn down.

• Blog: Horses of Tyneside beware

Moberg-Karlsson, 19, signed a four-year contract with the Black Cats on Wednesday after completing the formalities of a move from IFK Goteborg.

The deal, rumoured to be costing Sunderland an initial £1.7 million, is further proof of manager Paolo Di Canio's attempts to bolster a squad that only narrowly avoided relegation last season.

And Moberg-Karlsson, who began his career at IFK Mariestad, says he cannot wait to make the move from his homeland Sweden to the Premier League.

"Obviously it's a big opportunity for me and it is a chance that I couldn't afford not to take," he told ESPN. "Sebastian [Larsson] is a great player and it's great to have another Swedish player in the club. I'm going to play and train with a lot of great players in the club. I haven't spoke with him [Di Canio] at all. I've heard a lot about him but I don't know him personally."

Able to play on the left wing or as a striker, the youngster has already been capped at Under-17 and Under-19 level for Sweden.

And although he is desperate to make the step up to the next level, Moberg-Karlsson says he is willing to be patient in order to gain a first-team opportunity at the Stadium of Light.

"I'm excited it's a Premier League club, it's a big club," he said. "I looked at the facilities and it's great so I'm looking forward to it. My best skill is probably my technique and speed, particularly one-on-one. Of course, if I'm offered the wing I prefer that because then I can come one-on-one much more, but I like to play as a striker too, so I can do both. I'm going to say goodbye to my team-mates soon.

"I don't know where I will play, I haven't even trained with them yet. I'm not going to get myself down if I don't play. There's many good players in the club, and I'll have to train a lot and train hard to come up in a good standard. I know it will be tough in the beginning but I will do my best and hopefully play some games.

"Of course, maybe [I can make the step up], I haven't been with the Under-21s yet, but that's not what my focus is about. If I'm with the Under-21s next time it's good, but I don't think about it now, the thing I think about is to come to Sunderland to train well and hopefully play well."
