AC Milan hardman Gennaro Gattuso has been named as the new manager of Italian side Palermo.
Palermo, relegated from Serie A at the end of last season, moved quickly to replace Giuseppe Sannino, hoping the Gattuso could immediately gain promotion back to the country's premier division.
Gattuso, a Champions League and World Cup winner, has signed a one-year contract with an option of a two-year extension.
"Palermo ... has entrusted Gennaro Gattuso with the charge of leading the Rosanero's first team," Palermo said on their official website, www.palermocalcio.it.
The 35-year-old Gattuso joins the club after enduring an unhappy spell as Sion player-coach last season, falling foul of the Swiss club's president, Christian Constantin, after recording only 10 points from 11 games.
But moving to Palermo may not guarantee job security, with the club's president, Maurizio Zamparini dispensing with at least 25 coaches in the past 11 years.
