Pardew: I'm staying at Newcastle

Alan Pardew has told the Evening Chronicle that he intends to continue as manager of Newcastle United after speculation that he could be about to resign.

• Blog: Opener should focus Toon

Pardew, 51, spoke out during a turbulent week for the Magpies in which Joe Kinnear has been appointed as the new director of football on a three-year-deal.

Kinnear, 66, is a controversial character whose presence has riled some fans after a spell as interim manager in 2008-09 saw him swear at journalists and reportedly fall out with players.

News of his return was followed by confirmation from Derek Llambias that he would be stepping down from his role as managing director - something Kinnear had revealed in an interview with talkSPORT.

With Pardew understood to be shocked by news of Kinnear's appointment, speculation began to mount that he could look to walk away from St James' Park in the summer.

However, the former West Ham boss, who endured an arduous second season on Tyneside, pledged his future to the club, saying: "I am staying - to take the club up the league."

That news may ease the nerves of Newcastle fans still digesting the events of the last week. With club officials set to meet a number of supporters' group this week, the appointment of Kinnear is likely to be high on the agenda.
