PSG to sign Capello - reports

Paris Saint-Germain are set to unveil Fabio Capello as their new coach, according to French media, freeing Carlo Ancelotti to join Real Madrid.

Myriad sources in France reported Capello could be unveiled as soon as Wednesday - just 12 days before the first-team squad are due to return from holiday - to finally permit the PSG powers-that-be to allow Ancelotti to be excused from the final year of his contract at the Parc des Princes, a request he made to them a month ago.

According to Le Parisien, Capello's lawyer son, Pierfilippo, was in the French capital on Tuesday evening, reportedly to discuss his father's potential appointment, which could only be concluded once PSG have agreed to pay the €3 million release clause in the Italian's contract with the Russia national team.

Linked to PSG as soon as speculation started over Ancelotti's future, Capello was seen as the last man on a four-strong shortlist of candidates. The 67-year-old's age reportedly counted against him, while his status in the game seemingly precluded him from being the short-term solution PSG are looking for with Arsene Wenger still favourite to take on the role when his contract with Arsenal expires next summer.

However, after both Michael Laudrup and Andre Villas-Boas turned down a one-year deal with an option for a further year, Capello appears set to accept an identical agreement even though he has also set Russia well down the road to the 2014 World Cup.

Capello has the further advantage of having already worked closely with PSG sporting director Leonardo, who was a player under the former AC Milan boss at the San Siro in 1997, while his appointment would also reassure Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who have both stated their disappointment at Ancelotti's imminent departure.

Ibrahimovic played under Capello at Juventus between 2004 and 2006, with the Swede repeatedly stating the former England boss is one of the best coaches under whom he has worked.
