FIFA boss applauds Socceroos' victory

FIFA boss Sepp Blatter has added to a chorus of tweets congratulating the Socceroos on their World Cup qualification.

Australia booked their third consecutive berth in the tournament in Brazil next year with a 1-0 win over Iraq at ANZ Stadium on Thursday night.

Blatter was quick to jump on Twitter to applaud the squad on their victory.

"Congratulations @FFA @Socceroos! The 2nd team to qualify for @FifaWorldCup in 2014 after 1-0 win v Iraq in Sydney" the FIFA president wrote.

According to Twitter Australia's official account, there were more than 110,000 tweets about the Socceroos' qualification in the past 24 hours.

Among them were plaudits from sporting heavyweights Shane Warne and Liz Cambage, as well as A-League superstar import Alessandro Del Piero.

"C'mon @Socceroos! Congrats for the qualification @fifaworldcup 2014. Ciao Ale" the Sydney FC player posted.

"@Tim_Cahill Congrats to you and the boys mate, awesome result... #socceroos", cricketing great Warne said.

Even the man who became famous for his rendition of Peter Allen's I Go to Rio, Hugh Jackman, was impressed.

"The Socceroos are going to Rio. Massive result. Huge congratulations." the Oscar-nominated actor said.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan also weighed in, taking a dig at Australia's cricket team preparing for the Ashes series in the process.

"Congratulations to Australia on reaching the World Cup in Brazil... Now over to your Cricketers to do the business...#waitaminute" Vaughan posted.

"Football is obviously the national sport of Australia these days ...."
