Zidane 'not ready for top job'

Former Real Madrid coach Mariano Garcia Remon has suggested it is too early for Zinedine Zidane to take the vacant managerial job at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

• Zidane not qualified for Real job

With Madrid president Florentino Perez's first choice Carlo Ancelotti still stuck at Paris Saint-Germain, and valuable preparation time for next season ticking by, speculation continues in Spain that a plan to groom Zidane as a future first-team coach could be accelerated and the former galactico handed the reins to the senior side for next season.

Garcia Remon told Marca that in his view the pressure which comes with the position means it would be better for Zidane to be held back than thrown into the job so quickly.

"It is a premature to say that 'Zizou' could coach Real Madrid," the former Madrid goalkeeper said. "At the moment this remains a question without an answer. You do not know, nor can you say, who is going to come in. It is a very difficult job, where results decide everything. And not just that. Someone who is very mentally strong must come in, and they must let him work in peace. Everyone talks about Madrid and the pressure on the coach will have an impact when it comes to making decisions. Every Madrid coach is under more pressure than at any other club."

Garcia Remon can speak from experience, having been promoted to the Bernabeu first-team bench from reserve-team duties in September 2004 by Perez, before being fired just three months later with the team fifth in La Liga, 13 points behind leaders Barcelona.

And Perez stills remains in overall charge of goings on at the Bernabeu, according to Garcia Remon.

"These things of strategy and planning are Florentino's," he said. "He is in control, the one who chooses the profile [of the new coach] and who must chose for the benefit of the club."

Garcia Remon said the club needed more stability but even if the new coach got a long-term contract it might not mean as much, following Jose Mourinho's departure, despite having a contract which ran until 2016.

"You might have a four or five-year deal, but if the results are bad it must be broken," he said. "The example we saw most recently was with Mourinho, who has left with his contract still going. These type of things are done more to play to the gallery, because if you sign something like that it looks like there is a long-term plan. I hope whoever comes in gets the respect and peace he needs to do his job."
