Perth keeper signs for Phoenix

Former Perth Glory goalkeeper Lewis Italiano has joined the Wellington Phoenix for a year.

Italiano, 22, became the first signing for new Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick when he agreed to a one-year contract with the Wellington A-League club.

The 1.89m goalkeeper is currently playing for the Oakleigh Cannons in the Victoria Premier League and will not arrive until September 1.

Merrick says Italiano, who was Danny Vukovic's understudy in Perth for the past two seasons, was playing well for the Cannons.

"I've had several reports saying he is the best goalkeeper in the league."

He said Italiano would probably play in the Phoenix's opening game against the Brisbane Roar with Glen Moss expected to be called up for the All Whites.
