Lomas keen to win over Millwall fans

New Millwall manager Steve Lomas is confident he can win over fans unhappy with his appointment at the club.

The former captain of rivals West Ham has been chosen to replace Kenny Jackett, a decision which grated with some fans who hung a banner at the gates of The Den to tell Lomas he is not welcome at the club.

However, he is not letting the prospect of a fiery reception deter him and has promised to do everything in his power to try and take the club forward.

He said: "I have never said anything bad about Millwall. There is a history of managers playing for rival teams and taking on other teams. You just want to be judged on what you do. You have got to get performances and results to get the fans behind you.

"I used to love coming here as a player because you want to come to intimidating atmospheres. You took a bit of stick but that is part and parcel of the game, you have got to handle that.

"Any club I have been at, the fans would say I was passionate, whole-hearted and committed. I was not the greatest of players but I always gave everything.

"Nothing gave me greater pleasure than sending the fans home happy. I can assure Millwall fans that I will give everything to try and please them."

One of Lomas' first tasks in the job is improving the playing squad, with signing a striker top of his list. Millwall scored just four goals at home since New Year's Day and former Norwich striker Simeon Jackson has been linked.

"I am sure there and 10 or 11 managers who would love him," Lomas said. "He is a good player. He has come up the hard way and I like that in players because they are hungry. I have had great conversations with the chairman and the board have said they will back me.

"I have been told to bring in players to improve the team where I see fit and obviously try and progress the team."
