Bale to trademark heart-shaped logo

Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale has reportedly been successful in his bid to trademark a logo that features his heart-shaped goal celebration, which could make him up to £3 million a year.

• Blog: Bale trademark not silly

Bale, 23, has filed an application to the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) to trademark a logo which copies the goal celebration gesture he makes, with a number 11 - his shirt number - inside the heart.

An independent tribunal will decide whether he can trademark the 'Eleven of Hearts' logo, although reports suggest he will be successful.

It is anticipated that the move could pave the way for significant earnings for the Wales international, who has emerged as one of football's top talents following his fine form at Tottenham.

His displays have led to speculation that he could make a big money move to Real Madrid, where star players such as Cristiano Ronaldo maximise the potential of their image rights.

Bale has applied to trademark the logo for use on clothing, footwear and headgear as well as jewellery.

According to the IPO website, he has also applied to use the logo on leather goods, and "animal skins, hides; trunks and travelling bags; umbrellas, parasols and walking sticks; whips, harness and saddlery."

Nigel Currie, director of sports marketing agency brand-rapport, said: "The possibilities are huge for Gareth Bale. Once he has that right he can cash in on it and become a more well-known player.

"A third of his overall income could be made from his image rights, potentially up to £3 million a year."

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
