Schuster replaces Pellegrini at Malaga

Malaga have announced the appointment of Bernd Schuster as the successor to Manchester City-bound Manuel Pellegrini.

• Corrigan on Malaga's future

Schuster, 53, a former Real Madrid coach, has signed a five-year contract to replace Pellegrini, who oversaw Champions League success during three turbulent seasons at the club under owner Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani. Pellegrini's appojntment at City was confirmed later on Friday.

His arrival had been flagged in the Andalucian media in recent days, and was confirmed in a statement on the club's official website at lunchtime on Friday.

"Malaga Club de Futbol and Bernd Schuster have reached an agreement for the German to become the club's new coach," the statement read.

"The Andalucian club trusts him to develop a solid long-term project, so a five-season deal has been closed.

"Schuster joins up with the malaguista outfit after having managed, among others, Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Besiktas, Getafe and Levante.

"He will be presented as the new blanquiazul coach next week. He will bring his own technical team, including a former La Liga player as assistant coach and a fitness coach."

The appointment caps a busy week for Malaga, which saw Joaquin Sanchez and Manuel Iturra leave the club, Portuguese defenders Vitorino Antunes and Flavio Nunes Ferreira arrive on permanent deals and the Court of Arbitration for Sport turn down an appeal against UEFA's decision to ban the club from next season's Europa League.

Sporting director Mario Husillos also left on Tuesday, apparently after Malaga's owners decided to push forward with their decision to appoint Schuster against his wishes.

According to Spanish media reports, Husillos - who last month tried to persuade Newell's Old Boys boss Gerardo Tata Martino to replace Pellegrini - was not impressed by Schuster's record, but Al-Thani's camp wanted to appoint a high-profile figure.

Schuster guided Getafe to the 2007 Copa del Rey final, then won the 2007-08 La Liga title in his first season at Madrid.

His time as Bernabeu boss was marked by regular rows with local journalists, and he left in December 2008 following badly-received comments that his side had no chance of beating rivals Barcelona in a forthcoming Clasico.
