Police are aware of an online attack of a reported racist nature against Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse.
The 28-year-old Senegal international came under fire from the 'English Defence League' on Facebook after objecting to the club's new shirt sponsorship deal with internet loan company Wonga.
A follower of Muslim belief, Cisse is refusing to wear the new shirt as Sharia Law prevents followers from benefiting from the lending of money, a stance that was met by racist remarks on the social network medium.
"We have been made aware of abusive comments made on Facebook," said Northumbria Chief Supt Dianne Winship.
"Northumbria Police take all reports of abuse very seriously and enquiries are being conducted."
