Anin out of coma after car accident

Nice midfielder Kevin Anin has been brought out of the artificially-induced coma into which he was placed after suffering potentially career-threatening injuries in a car accident last week.

Anin, 26, reportedly sustained multiple arm fractures and spinal injuries when a car he was travelling in overturned on a motorway in his native Normandy.

While the three other occupants of the vehicle emerged virtually unscathed, the Le Havre-born player was rushed to hospital in Rouen where he was put into a coma.

Julien Fournier, Nice's director general, told L'Equipe on Thursday: "He has woken up and is breathing on his own."

Speaking to RMC, Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere refused to confirm Anin's state of health, but did suggest that the former Sochaux man, who has a history of depressive episodes brought on by homesickness, would face significant changes.

"I talk with the family almost every day on the phone. It's not up to us to talk about the medical situation, the family will do that when they want to," he said. "We all know, unfortunately, that it's a very serious accident. The whole club has been badly affected by what has happened to Kevin, who is an adorable, charming boy.

"When he came to the club, I gave a commitment, which was to give him back his smile. The whole club got behind him, and he had re-found his taste for life. He's great when he's like that. Unfortunately, the momentum has been broken, and another life is starting for him."
