Zidane lined up for Real role

Zinedine Zidane has told Real Madrid president Florentino Perez that he wants to be the club's new assistant first team coach, according to reports in Spain.

• 'Zizou' set for leading role

AS says that the pair met for two hours at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday afternoon. Zidane reportedly told Perez that he did not wish for a high-profile role involving media and office duties, and would prefer to work day to day with players on the training pitch.

This may have been a disappointment for the Blancos president, who has spoken regularly in recent weeks of his wish for the Frenchman to be the public front of the club's new "sporting project" from now on. Perez had also publicly put forward the idea of Zidane as a candidate for the vacant Bernabeu manager's job, however he currently lacks the relevant coaching qualification.

Should - as expected once Paris Saint Germain themselves find a replacement - Carlo Ancelotti eventually arrive as Madrid's first team coach, Zidane would now be his No. 2.

Perez had hinted on Wednesday evening to Spanish radio show Tiempo Extra that the former 'galactico' could have a role similar to that played by his ex-team-mate Aitor Karanka during Jose Mourinho's three years in charge. "He could be like Karanka with Mourinho for the next coach," Perez said.

Spanish radio show El Larguero shared further details of the meeting on Thursday night, with host Jose Ramon de la Morena claiming Perez wanted Ancelotti to quickly speak with Malaga starlet Isco, 21, whose sparkling displays during the current European Under-21 Championship have built his reputation still further both in Spain and further afield.

Incoming Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, who has skilfully nurtured the player's talent during their two seasons together at Malaga, has reportedly already tried to convince the player to join him again at Eastlands.

However Isco, whose current contract contains a €35 million release, and whose father was photographed driving into the Bernabeu to meet with Perez last month, may prefer to stay in La Liga and join Madrid.
