Spain storm past Netherlands

Spain secured top spot in Group B at the European Under-21 Championships with a 3-0 victory over Netherlands.

Both nations had already qualified for the semi-finals so Wednesday's games were purely about who they would face in the final four, but Netherlands fielded a team which showed 11 changes from their win over Russia last time out.

• Scout's Notebook: Sarabia to the fore

It was clear Spain were determined to take top spot and book a meeting with Norway, and they took the lead after 26 minutes with Alvaro Morata converting after good work from Pablo Sarabia. Just six minutes later it was two when Manchester City target Isco scored with a fine dinked finish.

Alvaro Vazquez completed the scoring in the 90th minute which means Netherlands finished second in the group and will now face Italy.

In the meeting of the group whipping boys, Russia were condemned to the wooden spoon as they were beaten 2-1 by Germany. Alan Dzagoev put the Russians in front on 22 minutes but the lead did not last long before Patrick Herrmann levelled on 34.

It went from bad to worse for Russia in 39th minute when Georgi Shchennikov saw red for a foul on Tony Jantschke. And the turnaround was complete on 69 minutes when Herrmann was brought down in the box by Taras Burlak with Sebastian Rudy firing home the spot-kick.
