The transfer of Varela, 20, was agreed last week but has now been formally announced on the club’s official website.

Varela had a two-week trial with the Premier League champions in May and will compete in the Under-20 World Cup in Turkey later this month.

After signing with the club the player spoke of his excitement at joining one of the best teams in global football.

"I’m very pleased to be a part of this club, one of the best teams in the world," he said. "As everyone in the world knows, this is a huge club that has won everything and I really hope that continues.

"I’m very lucky there are quite a few Spanish-speakers here. It will certainly help me settle in."
